What do you need to do?

Examples of documentation are, Death Certificate, Indemnity Form, Will. Destroy all cheque books or cards this includes any additional cards on the account.

If an additional cardholder dies, their card(s) should be destroyed. Cancel any continuous authorities with the company concerned. These are regular automatic payments. (examples of this type of payment are AA, RAC).

When we receive the death certificate/documents…

If there's a credit balance, we will transfer the funds to their sole Co-operative current or ordinary savings account (dependant on the wishes of the next of kin) and close the Visa account.

If there's a credit balance and no sole account we will release the money in accordance with the instructions we receive. (please refer to documentation section).

If there's a debit balance and the account is insured, we will inform the insurance company who will process the claim.

If there's a debit balance and the account is not insured, we will transfer any available funds from a related sole account to clear the balance. If there is not enough money to clear the outstanding balance, this will become due from the estate.

When the balance on the account is nil, we will close the account. Any additional cardholders are welcome to apply for a Visa account in their own name. You can apply on-line or by contacting our Customer Service Centre on 0845 600 6000 (Call charges).
